Complete summary of the story, centered on Rosette and Chrno
These summaries are meant to be a presentation of the basic
storyline of Chrno Crusade, and are focused exclusively on Rosette and
Chrno. It’s not nearly the same as reading the actual manga though, and
there is a lot of stuff that I left out. Anyway, these summaries are far
from being exhaustive, but they do contain lots of spoilers for the entire
series, so read them at your own risk! ^_^ Also, take a look at the

Rosette’s childhood and her first meeting with Chrno
Rosette and her younger brother
Joshua were orphaned at a very young age. This created a very special bond
between the two siblings, who were taken in by in the Seventh Bell
Orphanage, in the peaceful countryside of Michigan. They lived there for a
few years, being taken care of by the kind Mrs. Jean, but their happiness
didn’t last long. The strong, cheerful, strong-willed Rosette had always
been very protective of Joshua, who had extraordinary healing powers, yet
he himself was constantly sick due to a strange illness. The Magdalan
Order, a militaristic religious organization, took an interest in
Joshua and sent Father Remington to the orphanage in order to convince him
to join them, but Rosette, not wanting to be separated from her dear
brother, decided to escape with him and hide in the forest for a while
until Remington went away. While wandering in the forest, Rosette and
Joshua accidentally stumbled upon a big mausoleum hidden in an underground
passage, and when they opened the door, they found what they least
expected to see: a child, about their own age, in a very miserable
condition. The child turned out to be Chrno, a demon who had been
sealed inside the tomb of a very special person for more than 50 years.
Rosette took pity on him, and not caring who he really was, generously
offered him some cookies. This simple act of kindness deeply moved Chrno,
and it was the start of a very special friendship between the two.
Chrno, Rosette and Joshua
frequently met in secret in their “special place” beside the forest. This
continued for some time, until Joshua, tired of being protected by Rosette
and wanting to become strong for her sake, suddenly decided to join the
Magdalan Order. Rosette, crying, went to Chrno’s side seeking comfort, but
the two of them were interrupted by the demon Aion, a former comrade of
Chrno. Aion made an offer to Chrno: forgiving his past “mistakes” and
returning his horns if Chrno decided to re-join him and his former
allies, called “The Sinners”. Demons needed their horns in order to
use the energy of the Astral Line, the source of life of every
living being in the planet. A demon like Chrno, who lost his horns in a
fight against Aion several decades ago, not only was unable to use his
powers, but was also condemned to a slow death, since total depletion of
Astral energy meant death to demons.
Aion had always been very
ambitious, and Chrno, who only wanted to be at peace, refused his offer.
Aion then gave Chrno’s horns to Joshua, who also played an important part
in his scheme. Chrno had been using the form of a child in order to
minimize his usage of Astral energy, but sensing that Joshua was in real
danger, used the last of his powers to regain his true form, a young man
with huge dark wings, and quickly took Rosette to Joshua’s side.
Joshua, overwhelmed by the power of Chrno’s horns, quickly lost his sanity
and used a “time freeze” to turn everything around him into stone,
including the rest of the kids who lived in the orphanage. Rosette tried
to shake Joshua out of his demented state, but Chrno, seeing her in
danger, immediately took her away to a safe place.
Joshua was kidnapped by Aion and Rosette asked Chrno for his help in order
to rescue him and the people at the orphanage who had been “frozen”.
Chrno, however, was very low in Astral energy, and was unable to do
anything for them, unless he found somebody willing to make a contract
with him. Rosette then asked Chrno what a contract was, and was shocked to
hear the answer: hornless demons such as him needed an alternative source
of energy, which was the remaining lifetime (or “soul”) of a person
who wanted to make a contract with them in order to grant his or her
wishes. The “soul” of the person would then become the power source of the
demon, and his or her life would reduce drastically every time the demon
used his powers. In addition to that, the person would suffer terribly
every time his or her life was used. If Rosette wanted to make a contract
with Chrno, she would be in constant pain and would only live for a short
amount of time. Would she be able to bear with it in order to save her
brother and her friends at the orphanage? Rosette said she would, and
begged Chrno to make a contract with her. Chrno, sad for what he had to
do, yet moved by Rosette’s determination, agreed to help her. Chrno then
used an ancient pocketwatch, which was always hanging around his neck, as
the symbol of their contract. The pocketwatch then became a seal for
Chrno’s powers and an indicator of Rosette’s remaining lifetime.
How Rosette and Chrno became our favorite gun-toting exorcists
Shortly after Rosette and Chrno made the contract, Minister Remington, who
was near the orphanage when everything happened, returned and took them to
live at the NY headquarters of the Magdalan Order. Rosette was constantly
bullied by the rest of the girls her age due to the rumor that she had
made a contract with a demon, but despite this, she soon became a popular
member of the order, with a little help from Elizabeth, a special friend
of hers, who quickly realized how much Rosette and Chrno cared for each
other. Rosette trained very hard to become an “exorcist”, that is,
a nun who could fight against the many monsters that roamed the
surroundings, and she succeeded despite her rebellious attitude and her
ability for getting into trouble. Chrno, being a demon, was always seen
with suspicion by everyone in the Magdalan Order, specially Sister Kate,
the headmistress of the NY branch, but since Rosette’s life was
irrevocably connected to his, he was allowed to be beside Rosette as her
assistant. Their life together at the Magdalan Order was a constant
headache for Sister Kate, thanks to Rosette and Chrno’s big trouble-making
abilities, yet they both lived happily for almost 4 years, until they were
sent to a very special mission...
A nun, a demon, an apostle and a witch, together...
The
new mission Rosette and Chrno were assigned to, was to rescue a young girl
by the name of Azmaria Hendrick from the clutches of her evil foster
father, who wanted to use the supernatural powers she had for his own
twisted plans. Azmaria was an Apostle, that is, a person able to
use the powers of the Astral Line. Rosette and Chrno succeeded in their
mission and brought Azmaria to live with them at the NY convent of the
Magdalan Order. Shortly afterwards, Father Remington finally got a clue to
the location of Joshua, who was last seen in San Francisco. Rosette, Chrno
and Azmaria were allowed to go there to look for him, and along the way,
they met a mysterious woman, by the name of Satella Harvenheit, who was a
jewel witch, that is, a person able to use the power of magic
jewels. Satella, like Rosette, also fought against demons and was also
looking for someone: her older sister, who had been kidnapped by a
hornless demon 10 years ago. Satella, at first, was highly suspicious of
Chrno, but she soon realized he was not the demon she was looking for, and
decided to accompany Rosette, Azmaria and Chrno to the West Coast to look
for her sister, despite the constant fights between Rosette and her
(caused mostly by Satella’s attraction to little boys, in other words,
Chrno). Along the way, Rosette and Chrno had to face Rizel, a former ally
of Chrno who was also one of the Sinners, that is, one of Aion’s
followers.
Shortly after arriving in San Francisco, Rosette and Co. went to a
carnival at night to relax a little before the real battle against the
Sinners started. Rosette and Chrno shared a few moments together, and
their friendship started to evolve into something deeper, but something
happened that would soon separate them: Joshua suddenly appeared. Rosette
tried to talk to him, but far from recognizing his sister, Joshua tried to
kill her. Chrno was about to attack Joshua in order to protect Rosette,
when she suddenly stopped him, and Joshua ended up shooting Chrno instead.
In his agony, Chrno remembered a bit of his past, and challenged by Aion
to stand up and fight him, he completely lost himself in anger. Chrno,
blinded by rage, forcefully opened the seal that controlled his powers and
went back to his original form, recovering from his wounds while Rosette
suffered agonizing pain. Chrno then went berserk and fought against Aion
and Wid (another Sinner), destroying part of the city in the process and
killing or wounding a lot of people. Chrno was about to kill Wid, when a
mysterious voice ordered him to stop. Chrno suddenly remembered Rosette,
and he immediately went back to his child form. However, the damage was
already done: Chrno had spent most of Rosette’s remaining lifetime, and
she was in terrible pain. Aion took advantage of Chrno’s confusion to
pierce a hole through his chest and capture Azmaria, leaving Rosette and
Chrno wounded and completely defeated. Chrno, broken for what he had
unwillingly done to Rosette, lost himself in despair and decided to fall
into a deep, eternal sleep so he could stop using Rosette’s lifetime and
she could live a little longer. When Rosette woke up after being
unconscious for several days, and found out what Chrno had done for her
sake, she was heartbroken, but after speaking with Satella and Remington,
she regained her former optimism, and decided to save Chrno from his
self-imposed punishment. Rosette, with the help of the Elder, a scientist
from the Magdalan Order, risked everything she had and went inside Chrno’s
soul. She had very limited time for that, and if she didn’t “return” on
time, her life would be in grave danger...
Once
inside Chrno’s soul, Rosette began to see a lot of memories from his past,
and finally learned the truth about him. Chrno was once a high-ranking
demon who betrayed Pandemonium, the demon society, following Aion’s dream
of freedom. Chrno only wanted to live in peace, but wanting to protect the
weak, he was soon forced to confront a hundred of his former allies. Chrno
went berserk, and mercilessly killed all of them in a fit of rage. Aion
was delighted with the amazing powers Chrno had, and he decided to use
Chrno as “a sword” that is, a ruthless killer under his orders. Chrno,
however, was not happy with what he had done, but he continued to obey
Aion wanting to be free someday. After living with the rest of the Sinners
(Aion, Jenai, Wid, Sheda and Rizel) for some time, Chrno was sent to a
very special mission: kidnapping a “holy maiden” by the name of Magdalene,
who was protected by the Magdalan Order. Chrno succeeded in his mission,
but he soon found himself unwillingly attracted to her. Magdalene was a
kind and beautiful woman who could see the future and was appreciated by
the rest of the Sinners due to her peaceful nature. Things went well for a
while, but everything soon changed for the worse. Due to an incident with
Pandemonium, Aion decided to get rid of Magdalene, and ordered Chrno to
kill her. Chrno refused, and Aion, who considered Chrno a real friend and
a brother, was very angry by his refusal. They fought, and they were both
badly injured, but Chrno had lost his horns and, being completely unable
to heal himself, was soon on the verge of death. Magdalene, desperately
trying to save him, decided to make a contract, and Chrno, wanting to see
her happy, and not knowing what a contract really was, agreed. Magdalene
and Chrno then spent some time together, but Aion, who could not forgive
Chrno for betraying him, suddenly appeared and pierced a hole through the
both of them. Chrno then used his powers to defeat Aion, not knowing that
the source of his powers actually came from Magdalene’s remaining
lifetime. He was able to defeat Aion and recover from his wounds, but
Magdalene died in his arms. Chrno, broken for what he had done to the
woman he loved, decided to bury himself alive next to her grave, until he
eventually ran out of Astral energy and died...
After seeing most of Chrno’s past, Rosette was finally able to find
Chrno’s real self, who was hiding inside his memory of Magdalene’s tomb.
Rosette tried to convince him of going back with her to the real world,
but Chrno stubbornly refused. Chrno was willing to spend the rest of his
life in the darkness of his own regret because he didn’t want Rosette to
die because of him. He wanted her to live, even if it meant not seeing her
again, and felt very bad at himself for having made a contract with her,
even knowing that she would eventually suffer the same fate as Magdalene.
Rosette, heartbroken after hearing this, told Chrno how happy she was for
having him at her side, and begged him to not give up on everything they
had built together. Rosette’s time was almost up, and her life was in real
danger, but she still continued to talk to Chrno until she finally
fainted. Chrno then jumped to protect her from falling, and they both woke
up in each other’s arms. Chrno told Rosette that he just couldn’t stop
worrying about her, but the wound on his chest opened again, and he
started coughing blood. Rosette then used part of her own lifetime to heal
him, and told Chrno that she was willing to share half of his pain and
regret so he didn’t have to suffer by himself. Chrno finally remembered
his real motivation for making the contract with Rosette: protecting her
and staying by her side forever, and they both embraced, crying.
The final battle
against Aion and the Sinners begins
After Rosette and Chrno recovered, they started to
prepare for the final battle against Eden,
the Sinner’s base, along with everybody else in the Magdalan Order.
Remington, after hearing a private conversation between Chrno and Rosette,
found out about the true identity of Chrno, and he took the both of them
to Aion’s secret passageway to Eden. Remington, however, wanted to fight
against Chrno first. Remington had been Magdalene’s protector at the Order
a long time ago, and was still very angry at him for having killed her.
Chrno and Remington fought, but Rosette intervened and convinced Remington
to give up on his hatred. Then the two of them went to Eden, and after
fighting against Jenai, one of the Sinners, they finally met Joshua and
the other 6 Apostles in a large room called the “Oratorio”. They
tried to reach him, but they were unable to get close to him, and they
were soon forced to fight against several Pursuers who were also attacking
Aion’s base. They were rescued by Satella, who was also there in order to
look for her sister, and after quickly saying goodbye to her, they were
left on their own. Rosette and Chrno hurried towards the many halls of the
base in search of Joshua, but they soon found themselves in front of an
enormous door. Chrno opened it, but there were a lot of monstrous
Legions waiting for them at the other side. Chrno then pushed Rosette
out of the way, and the huge door that was between them closed
automatically, separating a seriously injured Chrno from a very desperate
Rosette...
Rosette tried to destroy the enormous door that separated Chrno
and her using her gun, but nothing happened. Chrno told her to just leave him
behind and go find Joshua by herself, but Rosette, not wanting Chrno to die,
took the pocketwatch and opened the seal instead. Chrno recovered his real form
and knowing that Rosette’s lifetime was already running out, desperately forced
the door open, but she was nowhere to be seen. Rosette had fainted, but Joshua,
who wanted to meet her again, rescued her and took her to a safe place. Rosette
tried to convince Joshua to return the horns to Chrno, but she only made him
angry, and she was forced to confront him in a very dangerous battle. Rosette,
however, was able to break one of Chrno’s horns from Joshua’s head, and Joshua,
recovering a bit of his sanity, willingly took off the other horn. The children
at the Seventh Bell orphanage went back to normal, and Joshua finally recovered
his sanity and was able to reconcile with his sister. Rosette hurried back to
Chrno’s side to return his horns, but she fell before she was able to reach him.
Chrno, terrified at seeing Rosette dying, fled to her side and tried to speak to
her, but Rosette could not hear him anymore. Seeing him injured, Rosette made a
last effort to put Chrno’s horns back in their proper place at his head, but she
died before she could do it, leaving Chrno shouting in despair...
Chrno was broken by Rosette’s death, however, he still had one last duty
to fulfill: defeating Aion and giving a new hope to humanity, endangered
by Aion’s plans of polluting the world using Pandemonium’s powers. Aion
gave Chrno another chance to rejoin him, telling Chrno to forget about
Rosette and the rest of his human friends, but that only made him very
angry. Chrno then put his horns back on his head, defeating Aion’s geas
and recovering all his powers. Chrno challenged Aion to a duel, and was
about to go fight him, ready to die, when Azmaria stopped him. She said
that there was still a chance of saving Rosette, and Chrno, relieved,
decided to do everything in his hands to save her. Azmaria and Joshua took
Rosette to the Oratorio with the rest of the Apostles and they started to
“call” the Astral Lines while Chrno went against Aion in order to distract
him. Chrno and Aion stared to fight very fiercely, but Aion soon found out about Chrno’s
intentions and interrupted Azmaria and Joshua’s efforts to revive Rosette. Yet Chrno had not
given up yet and he defeated Aion by partially freezing him using the
“time barrier”. However, something terrible happened: Pandemonium’s soul
found out Rosette’s “empty” body, and she went inside her unconscious
body. Chrno then begged Rosette to not give up and asked her to fight
against Pandemonium and to come back to him...
Meanwhile, Rosette’s soul was already traveling to “the
underworld” (Heaven) inside a train filled with shady passengers. Rosette
could not feel anything or even remember most of her past, and she tried
to convince herself that she was okay now, but a mysterious woman
interrupted her thoughts and asked her if she really was satisfied with
her current situation. Rosette suddenly remembered Chrno and desperately
started searching for him inside the train, but she couldn’t find him
anywhere. Rosette suddenly understood that she was dead, and finally
realized how deep her feelings for Chrno were. She didn’t want to be
separated from him, and she still had a lot of things to tell him. Rosette
started to cry, but then she heard Chrno’s voice. She looked inside her
pocketwatch and saw what was happening at the moment: Chrno was struggling
against a rather insane Aion, who had broken free of the “time barrier”
and wanted to kill “Pandemonium” (Rosette). Chrno then told Aion that
Rosette was strong, that she had never been defeated and that she was
going to stand up for sure. Rosette then decided to go back to his side.
The mysterious woman told her that her remaining lifetime was very short,
but Rosette still decided to jump off the train, no matter what the
consequences were. Magdalene’s spirit appeared to help her, and Rosette
suddenly woke up beside Chrno. Both of them fired at Aion using Rosette’s
gun, leaving him seriously injured while Pandemonium’s spirit disappeared
in a flash of light. Chrno and Rosette hugged each other, but then…
The final chapter of Chrno Crusade is a must-read, so I won’t spoil it for
