Pandemonium and the Sinners

Chrno’s life has always been full of tragedy. Being a sensitive, kind-hearted person from the very beginning, probably feeling out of place in the oppressive, harsh demon society, he saw Aion’s rebellion against Pandemonium as an opportunity to be free and lead a new life. His dream, however, was soon painfully destroyed.

Aion’s big dream of freedom, far from being Chrno’s idea of a peaceful new life, only meant new troubles for him. Chrno lost his high rank and position in Pandemonium, was labeled as a traitor, and was despised by those of his own kind. Chrno wanted to protect the weak, but failing to do so, he lost himself in rage and savagely killed a hundred of his former allies. Chrno won the admiration and respect of Aion and the rest of the Sinners, but for Chrno, the title of “killer of 100 demons” only meant painful memories and remorse. Chrno and the Sinners were able to escape from Pandemonium, but they were constantly hunted by the Pursuers, and they were unable to be completely at peace. Then Chrno started to feel attracted towards Magdalene, a kind and beautiful woman who he kidnapped from the Magdalan Order at Aion’s request. Aion, who only saw the amazing powers Magdalene had as another tool to achieve his dream, soon decided to get rid of her, but Chrno refused, and his friendship with Aion was destroyed in an instant. Chrno and Aion fought, and they were both badly injured, but Chrno had lost his horns in the fight and was completely unable to heal himself. Demons needed their horns in order to use the energy of the Astral Line, the source of life of every living being in the planet. A hornless demon like Chrno not only was unable to use his powers, but was also condemned to a very slow death, since total depletion of Astral energy meant death to demons. Chrno was soon on the verge of death, but Magdalene, desperately trying to save him, asked him to make a contract with her. Chrno, wanting to live for her sake, agreed, without knowing that a “contract” really meant using Magdalene’s lifetime as the source of his powers. Chrno recovered from his wounds and spent some time in Magdalene’s company, but one day Aion appeared again and stabbed the both of them. Chrno used his powers and was able to defeat him, but Magdalene died in his arms. Chrno, broken after losing Magdalene, decided to be buried alive beside her until he eventually ran out of Astral energy and died.

A New Reason to Live

Chrno spent the next 50 years sealed in Magdalene’s mausoleum, but one day, something really unexpected happened: the seal on the door was suddenly opened and two children, a boy and a girl, went inside and found him in a very miserable condition. The girl, Rosette, took pity on him, and generously offered him some cookies. This simple act of kindness deeply moved Chrno, and it was the start of a very special friendship between the two.

Chrno, Rosette and her brother Joshua frequently met in secret in the forest. This continued for some time, until Joshua, a sickly boy with special powers, suddenly decided to go with Remington, a minister of the Magdalan Order, a religious militaristic organization that was interested in him. Joshua and Rosette were orphans, and he wanted to be strong so his sister didn’t have to worry about him. Rosette went to Chrno’s side seeking comfort, but they were interrupted by Aion, who had been watching them closely. Aion offered to return Chrno’s horns if he decided to rejoin the Sinner’s group, but Chrno refused. Aion then gave Chrno’s horns to Joshua, who was overwhelmed by their power and quickly lost his sanity. Joshua used a “time freeze” to turn everything around him into stone, including the kids who lived in the Seventh Bell orphanage where he and Rosette lived. Rosette tried to reason with Joshua, but Chrno, seeing her in danger, immediately took her away to a safe place.

Joshua was kidnapped by Aion and Rosette asked Chrno for his help, but Chrno was very low in Astral energy and he couldn't do anything unless he found somebody willing to make a contract with him. Rosette then asked him what a contract was, and Chrno told her the truth: hornless demons such as him needed an alternative source of energy, which was the remaining lifetime of a person. If Rosette made a contract with Chrno she would be in constant pain and would only live for a short amount of time. Would she be able to bear with it in order to save her brother and her friends? Rosette said she would, and Chrno, moved by Rosette’s determination, agreed to help her. Chrno then used a pocketwatch that was always hanging around his neck, as a seal for his powers and as an indicator of Rosette’s remaining lifetime.

The Magdalan Order

After Rosette and Chrno made the contract, Minister Remington took them to live at the NY headquarters of the Magdalan Order so Rosette could train to become an exorcist. Chrno, being a demon, was always seen with suspicion by everyone in the Magdalan Order, specially Sister Kate, the headmistress of the NY branch, but since Rosette’s life was irrevocably connected to his, he was allowed to be beside her as her assistant. Their life together at the Magdalan Order was a constant headache for Sister Kate, yet they both lived happily there for 4 years. They befriended Azmaria Hendrick, a young girl with supernatural powers who they rescued from her evil foster father, and shortly afterwards, Remington finally got a clue to the location of Joshua, who was last seen in San Francisco. Rosette, Chrno and Azmaria were allowed to go there to look for him, and along the way, they met Satella Harvenheit, who was a jewel witch, that is, a person able to use the power of magic jewels. Satella, like Rosette, also fought against demons and was looking for someone: her older sister, who had been kidnapped by a hornless demon 10 years ago. Satella, at first, was highly suspicious of Chrno, but she soon realized he was not the demon she was looking for, and they soon made good friends, despite her constant fights against Rosette. Satella then decided to accompany Rosette, Azmaria and Chrno to the West Coast to look for her own sister.

Carnival Night

Shortly after arriving in San Francisco, Rosette and Co. went to a carnival at night to relax a little before the real battle against Aion and the Sinners started. Rosette and Chrno shared a few moments together, and their friendship started to evolve into something deeper, but Rosette suddenly ran away from Chrno and was lost for a while. When Chrno finally found her, Rosette was being targeted by Joshua, who apparently couldn’t recognize her. Chrno was about to attack Joshua to protect Rosette, when she suddenly stopped him, and Joshua ended up shooting Chrno instead. He was badly injured, and in his agony, Chrno, challenged by Aion to stand up and fight him, lost himself in anger. Chrno, blinded by rage, forcefully opened the seal that controlled his powers and went back to his original form, recovering from his wounds while Rosette suffered agonizing pain. Chrno then went berserk and fought against Aion and Wid, one of the Sinners, destroying part of the city in the process. Chrno was about to kill Wid, when a voice ordered him to stop. Chrno suddenly remembered Rosette, and he immediately went back to his child form. However, the damage was already done: Chrno had spent most of Rosette’s remaining lifetime, and she was in terrible pain. Aion took advantage of Chrno’s confusion to pierce a hole through his chest and capture Azmaria, leaving Rosette and Chrno wounded and defeated. Chrno, broken for what he had unwillingly done, decided to fall into a deep, eternal sleep so he could stop using Rosette’s lifetime and she could live a little longer...

The Shadow of the Past

Chrno had been hiding inside his memory of Magdalene’s tomb for some time, when Rosette suddenly appeared before him. Rosette had entered his mind and had seen most of his past, including Magdalene's death. She tried to convince him of going back with her to the real world, but Chrno stubbornly refused. He was willing to spend the rest of his life in the darkness of his own regret because he didn’t want Rosette to die, and felt very bad at himself for having made a contract with her knowing that she would eventually suffer Magdalene's fate. Rosette, heartbroken after hearing this, told Chrno how happy she was for having him at her side, and begged him to not give up on everything they had built together. Rosette’s life was in real danger, but she still continued to talk to Chrno until she fainted. Chrno then jumped to protect her from falling, and they both woke up in each other’s arms. Chrno told Rosette that he just couldn’t stop worrying about her, but the wound on his chest opened again, and he started coughing blood. Rosette then used part of her own lifetime to heal him, and told Chrno that she was willing to share half of his pain and regret so he didn’t have to suffer by himself. Chrno finally remembered his real motivation for making the contract with Rosette: protecting her and staying by her side forever, and they both embraced, crying.

The Last Fortress

After Rosette and Chrno recovered, they started to prepare for the final battle against Eden, the Sinner’s base, along with everybody else in the Magdalan Order. Remington, after hearing a private conversation between Chrno and Rosette, found out about the true identity of Chrno, and he took the both of them to Aion’s secret passageway to Eden. Remington, however, wanted to fight against Chrno first. He had been Magdalene’s protector a long time ago, and was still very angry at Chrno for killing her. Chrno and Remington fought, but Remington soon gave up and let them go. Chrno and Rosette went to Eden, and after fighting against Jenai, one of the Sinners, they finally met Joshua and the other 6 Apostles in a large room called the “Oratorio”. They tried to reach him, but they were unable to get close to him, and they were soon forced to fight against several Pursuers who were also attacking Aion’s base. Rosette and Chrno hurried towards the many halls of the base in search of Joshua, but they soon found themselves in front of an enormous door. Chrno opened it, but there were a lot of mounstrous Legions waiting for them at the other side. Chrno pushed Rosette out of the way, and the huge door closed automatically, separating an injured Chrno from a desperate Rosette...

The Parting

Chrno told Rosette to leave him behind and go find Joshua by herself, but Rosette, not wanting Chrno to die, took the pocketwatch and opened the seal instead. Chrno recovered his real form and knowing that Rosette’s lifetime was already running out, desperately forced the door open, but she was nowhere to be seen. Chrno was forced to fight alone against an army of monsters, until he finally defeated all of them. Then Rosette suddenly came back and hurried back to his side to return his horns, taken from Joshua’s head, but she fell before she was able to reach him. Chrno, terrified at seeing Rosette dying, fled to her side and tried to speak to her, but Rosette could not hear him anymore. Seeing him injured, Rosette made a last effort to put Chrno’s horns back in their proper place at his head, but she died before she could do it, leaving Chrno shouting in despair.

Countdown

Chrno was broken by Rosette’s death, however, he still had one last duty to fulfill: defeating Aion and giving a new hope to humanity, endangered by Aion’s plans of polluting the world using Pandemonium’s powers. Aion gave Chrno another chance to rejoin him, telling Chrno to forget about Rosette and the rest of his human friends, but that only made him very angry. Chrno then put his horns back on his head, defeating Aion’s geas and recovering all his powers. Chrno challenged Aion to a duel, and was about to go fight him, ready to die, when Azmaria stopped him. She said that there was still a chance of saving Rosette, and Chrno, relieved, decided to do everything in his hands to save her. Azmaria and Joshua took Rosette to the Oratorio with the rest of the Apostles and they started to “call” the Astral Lines while Chrno went against Aion in order to distract him. Aion soon found out about Chrno’s intentions and interrupted Azmaria and Joshua’s efforts, but Chrno had not given up yet and he defeated Aion by partially freezing him using the “time barrier”. Chrno then begged Rosette to not give up and asked her to come back to him, but he was stabbed on the back by a rather insane Aion, who had broken free of the “time barrier” and wanted to kill “Pandemonium” (Rosette). Chrno then told Aion that Rosette was strong, that she had never been defeated and that she was going to stand up for sure, and Rosette miraculously woke up. Rosette and Chrno fired at a very surprised Aion using Rosette’s gun, leaving him seriously injured. Chrno and Rosette hugged each other, but then...

The final chapter of Chrno Crusade is a must-read, so I won’t spoil it for you. A lot of things happen in the last chapters, so be sure to check them out! ^_^
